In his 36 years of experience (in the field of development from 1980 to 1996 and in research from 1996 to date), Dr. Raj has become an expert in his field on the local and international levels. For nearly a decade, he served as the South Asia Coordinator of a global research program called National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South and as a senior researcher regarding South Asia and Africa. At the latter position, he focused on conflict, peace and unconventional security issues (water, food, health, migration and mobility, social protection, environmental security), governance and state building, small arms and trans-disciplinary research approaches.
Currently, Dr. Raj is Executive Director of the Nepal Centre for Contemporary Research (NCCR), a specialized research think tank on conflict, peace and human security. He is teaching conflict-related courses and supervising PhD and masters students at Kathmandu University. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor at the Agriculture and Forestry University. He has published 41 books (written and co-edited) and more than 500 articles in journals, books and proceedings on the issues of his research. Dr. Raj is a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Foundation for Science (2014 to 2017) and Member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Unconventional Security Affairs at the University of California, Irvine (2009 to date). He is widely quoted in national and international media regarding Nepal’s armed conflict, peace process and state-building.
