Dr. Ehsan Ahrari is a defense consultant and independent strategic analyst. He previously served as Professor of National Security and Strategy at the National Defense University’s Joint Forces Staff College and Professor of West Asian Studies at the US Air War College. He also frequently lectures at the NATO School, the George C. Marshall Center, and the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Civil-Military Relations.

Biography

Ehsan Ahrari is the CEO of Strategic Paradigms, a Defense and Security Affairs consultancy. He served as Professor of West Asian Studies at the U.S. Air War College (1990-1994), Professor of National Security and Strategy at the Joint Forces Staff College of the National Defense University (1994-2005), and Professor of Security Studies (Counterterrorism) at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) (2007-2009).

In addition, Dr. Ahrari has given numerous lectures as a guest lecturer at the National War College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and the Marine Corps University, in the Washington Metropolitan Area; the Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey, California; the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, in Garmisch, Germany; and the NATO School, Oberammergau, Germany. He has also briefed numerous top U.S. military officials of CENTCOM, PACOM, USARPAC, MARFORPAC, and SOCOM.

Dr. Ahrari also had the unique opportunity to interview former Indian Prime Minister I. K. Gujral (1997) and Mr. J. N. Dixit, India’s Foreign Secretary, prior to his appointment as India’s National Security Advisor (2004). He also briefed Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, Chief of the Indian Navy Staff (1998); General Fahad al-Amir, Chief of Staff of Kuwait (2004); Dr. Juwono Sudarsono, Indonesia’s Minister of Defense (2008); and top officials of the National Security Council of Thailand (2009).

Dr. Ahrari has written extensively on the Islamist challenge in South Asia, strategic competition in Southern Asia (China, India, and Pakistan), anti-terrorism in South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East, counter-radicalization, and great power politics. He has testified twice before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission on China’s growing strategic interests in the Middle East and on China-Iran common interests in asymmetric war.

Dr. Ahrari’s list of publications includes 12 solo-authored, edited, or co-edited books and more than 400 essays and OpEds. He is currently finishing another book, The Islamic Challenge and the Great Powers. His personal website is http://www.ehsanahrari.com.
