Biography

Dick Crowell is an associate professor of joint military operations at the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC) in Newport, Rhode Island. He has authored monographs on information operations, cyberspace operations and hybrid warfare. His most recent work, Some Principles of Cyber Warfare, presents the concepts of cyber control, cyber denial, and disputed cyber control as methods of maneuvering in and through cyberspace in pursuit of military objectives and political ends. He co-edited the CIWAG case study, “Revolutionary Risks: Cyber Technology and Threats in the 2011 Libyan Revolution.”

Professor Crowell is a retired naval aviator with more than 30 years of flying and staff planning experience. He served as the Assistant Air Operations Officer for the Commander Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet, the Operations Officer for NATO Multi-Service Electronic Warfare Support Group, and Program Manager for the Commander Navy Recruiting Command. Before joining the USNWC faculty, he taught in the Joint & Combined Warfighting School (JCWS) and Joint Command, Control and Information Operations School (JC2IOS) at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC). Additionally, he has taught information operations sessions at the NATO School, Oberammergau, Germany and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Law and Cyber Warfare.
