Lecturer at NYU and a Columnist for Bloomberg Businessweek
Dr. Maha Hosain Aziz is a social scientist lecturing in the master’s program in the Politics Department at New York University (NYU); a columnist covering Asian political risk, strategy and analysis for Bloomberg Businessweek; and a research associate at the University of London (SOAS).
Dr. Maha Hosain Aziz is a social scientist lecturing in the master’s program in the Politics Department at New York University (NYU) and a research associate at the University of London (SOAS). Her research identifies global, regional and country-specific political risk factors, as well as strategies to mitigate them.
She is also an Asia Insight columnist for Bloomberg Businessweek, covering political risk, strategy and analysis. She has written about varied topics since 2009, including tackling perceived ethnic inequality in post-war Sri Lanka; reducing the potential for unrest among South Asia’s unemployed youth; and preventing further militant recruitment of the chronically unemployed in Pakistan. She is working on a book inspired by her column.
Previously, Dr. Aziz was a senior teaching fellow in the Politics and International Studies Department at SOAS. She lectured in an undergraduate course on democracy, development and militant groups in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan. At the London School of Economics (LSE), she taught an undergraduate course on British politics and democratic institutions, winning one university-wide teaching excellence award and two departmental teaching prizes in one year. She was also the C&J Modi/Narayanan Fellow at the LSE, while conducting her doctoral research on the moral economy.
Before her PhD, she worked in investment banking and media. She also earned a BA at Brown University, an MA at Columbia University and an MSc at the LSE. A Jordanian-born Pakistani, Aziz grew up in numerous cities in the Middle East, Western Europe, South East Asia and America.
