CASE STUDIES

RELIVING THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
The Royal Military College of Canada; Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)

Instead of simply memorizing facts about history-changing events, Wikistrat’s historical simulations provide a unique opportunity to relive these events from the decision-makers’ chair.

In light of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Wikistrat ran roleplaying simulations on the topic for leading academic institutions.

In these, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the multiple factors, strategies and behind-the-scenes discussions that led to the outcomes we are all familiar with.

Since 2016, Wikistrat has been running an annual simulation with NYU to explore the various possible events that might threaten stability around the globe in the upcoming year.

The simulation is an integral part of the "Political Risk & Prediction" course in the MA International Relations Program, and its assessment.

Leading experts from Wikistrat’s community also participate in the simulation by adding their own analyses and reviewing the grad students’ assessments.

For the 2024 edition, graduate students from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) also joined the simulation as part of the "Political Risk Analysis" course.

TESTIMONIALS

"The historical Wikistrat simulation was an outstanding addition to my course.

Current students found that the simulation complemented and increased their understanding of the course material. Former students enjoyed revisiting one of the most important events of the Cold War in a realistic, policy-oriented manner that allowed them to broaden their historical knowledge and sharpen analytical skills."
