Dr. Murphy is a renowned scholar of Africa and modern maritime piracy, with a specific focus on piracy in Sub-Saharan Africa. His studies focus mainly on piracy in Nigeria and Somalia, as well as the study of Islamism as a whole. Dr. Murphy began his academic career at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth where he received his undergraduate degree in English in 1973 and continued his studies as a Keasby Memorial Scholar and eventually received his certificate in Education in 1974. After spending over twenty years in international business, Dr. Murphy dove into the study of piracy and irregular warfare in 2002 as a master’s student at Reading University (U.K.) where he graduated with distinction in 2004. He continued his studies of piracy as a PhD. Student at the University of Reading, where he completed his thesis in 2007 titled “Small Boats, Weak States and Dirty Money: Contemporary Piracy and Maritime Terrorism’s Threat to International Security“.
Since completing his doctoral work, Dr. Murphy has offered his knowledge and insight on piracy to several prestigious organizations. He has served at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington, D.C., conducting research on naval strategy and force planning for maritime unconventional warfare. He also continues to serve on the faculty of several British universities as a visiting fellow and subject matter expert for maritime security.
Dr. Murphy is currently a Senior Fellow for the Michael Ansari Africa Center at the Atlantic Council of the United States as well as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University. He is the author of several books and monographs including, “Piracy, Terrorism and Irregular Warfare at Sea: Navies Confront the 21st Century“, which will be released in 2013.
