Wikistrat Hot Takes: Germany’s Position on Sending Tanks to Ukraine

On January 20, 50 countries agreed to provide Kyiv with billions of dollars worth of military hardware needed to push back Russian forces. Breaking with this decision, the German Defense Minister told reporters that Germany “still cannot say when a decision will be taken, and what the decision will be, when it comes to the Leopard tank.” Furthermore, Germany also refused to allow other countries to provide Ukraine with Leopard tanks that they purchased from it. Why does it matter? What happens if Germany agrees to send tanks to Ukraine? And what happens if it refuses?
